KUNMING, CHINA, 14-15 APRIL 2011 – Mining is a central industry of the social economy and plays a crucial role in modernization, particularly in China. As a major producer and consumer power, China has become increasingly more important to the healthy development of the global mining industry. With advanced scientific and technological support, and modern equipment support, the green mining industry in particular is receiving more and more attention.
After the tremendous success of the previous event, Noppen held their exclusive 2nd Annual China Mining Technology and Investment Summit on April 14th to 15th, 2011 in Kunming, Yunnan, a region with the richest mining resources in China. Supported by Kunming People's Municipal Government and Kunming Municipal Bureau of Investment Promotion, this summit focused on new policies, mining industry development trends, domestic and international investment opportunities, sustainable development, and mill tailings disposal. The event was attended by over 100 major mining groups and mine owners from across China who came together to discuss the development of the most advanced technology and to find the best solution providers.
Mr. Hong Weizhi, the Vice Secretary of Kunming People’s Municipal Government opened the event welcoming all the delegates and encouraging them to do business in Kunming in the near future. Mr. Luo Xiaolin, the Vice Chief of Kunming Municipal Bureau of Investment Promotion introduced the opportunities and investment environment of Kunming. He stated Kunming is plentiful in phosphor, salt, copper, iron, coal, titanium, quartzite, clay and other minerals; and its geographical location provides huge market potential and ample room for long-term development. One of the most revered speakers at the summit was John Coulter, Mining Advisor, for The State Council. He spoke on the implementation of replaceable resources for the National Crisis Mines and Minerals Program. As an observer of the development of China’s mining industry, he expressed the advantages and disadvantages of development in China from the view of a foreigner specialist. He also analyzed green mining from an economic point of view and explained the entropy concept. Mr. H. E. Fredirick M. M. Shava, Ambassador, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Zimbabwe introduced the development and investment opportunities in Zimbabwe mining. The government of Zimbabwe fully recognizes the importance of investment in the mining sector and mining policies are being reviewed so as to avail of a sound operating environment for sustainable development and align operating conditions with best global practices. From CAGS, Global Mining Resource Strategy Center, Wang Anjian, discussed the imbalance between the consumption and possession of global resources. He pointed out that developed countries, with 15% of the world’s population, consume over 45% of global energies and more than 50% of global mineral resources. "Very worthy event!" Encore Co Ltd
Keynote speakers included Richard Li, President of China Region, Eldoradogold who shared with us experiences and case studies based on Eldoradogold’s green mining development. Mr. Li has 29 years’ experience in the mining industry including 14 years’ experience in MNCs as a Senior Manager. Eldoradogold Co Ltd owns most gold mine investment properties in China, and they have done an impressive job in protecting the mining community, devoting themselves to green mining development. He Guojia, Vice President, National Institute of Occupational Safety spoke about the development of the coal mining industry and green exploration. He noted 2011 is an important year for anyone who wants to invest in the coal mining industry in China, to get Chinese investments, or to import into China or export from China. His presentation provided an in-depth analysis into the coal mining industry, market drivers, key enterprises and their strategies, as well as technologies and investment status, risks and trends. Also notable was Guo Jiguang, Director of Environment Protection Department, Shenhua Group who introduced ecological construction in Shenhua mining areas. As a foremost pioneer in China’s coal industry, Shenhua Group has always adhered to a scientific development outlook and the basic guideline of saving energy, reducing discharge, and protecting the environment.
The most prominent technology update was introduced by Kobus Malan, President Rocktec Division, Atlas Copco Construction & Mining Business. He spoke about using innovative technology to ensure sustainable productivity. Atlas Copco intends to stay at the cutting edge of RCS development. By using the combined expertise of all divisions and their ability to generate innovative solutions, higher levels of automation are assured. One of the latest developed loaders is the automation ready 14 tonne Scooptram ST14. It is designed with the latest technology for highest safety standard, performance, reliability and fuel efficiency. Another product, the OreAlyzer, performs in-situ X-ray florescence (XRF) or LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) of the ore content as drilling takes place. Successful application of OreAlyzer can significantly increase ore recovery and reduce waste. The delegates were very interested in their new technology developments and asked a lot of questions after the presentation.
Additional industry representatives included Yu ChangXing, the 12th President of the International Society for Mine Surveying. Mr Yu, who was also the Conference Chairperson, discussed energy saving through new energy development. He noted that new energy is the provision of energy that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Chen Jiabin, Deputy Director, Chinese Academy of Land and Resource Economics discussed the current situation for mineral resources and technical equipment in China. He stated how approx 90% of mining equipment used in China is produced domestically and that Chinese companies are developing the capacity to manufacture high-tech mining equipment. Nevertheless, most of the mining equipment produced in China still remains 10 to 15 years behind that of other developed countries with respect to mining efficiency, equipment quality, environmental protection of mines, and safety. Also from the Chinese Academy of Land and Resource Economics, Lv Zhicheng, presented on deep mine exploration and the impact on the mineralization pattern. Further speakers came from China International Mining Group (CIMG), the Embassy of Canada, Encore Co Ltd, Yunnan Luyuanheng Mining Lease Assessment Co Ltd, PWC and Hebei Hanxing Mine & Metallurgy Co Ltd.
