2nd Annual China Theme Park and Resort Expansion Summit

Noppen’s 2nd Annual Theme Park and Resort Expansion Summit took place on June 27th & 28th in Shanghai, China. China’s Parks and Resorts averages 100 million visitors per year and a yearly average consumption of more than 100 billion RMB. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, by the year 2020, China will overtake France and Spain to become the world's main tourist destination. This Summit assembled a congregation of high level professionals all of whom represent government departments, industry associations, real estate developers, theme park operators and entertainment facility suppliers from all over the world. Some topics discussed included China’s latest industrial policies, progress of major theme park projects, and global theme park management strategies. Furthermore attendees had the opportunity of liaising with domestic and overseas solution providers, meeting new clients, forming partnerships, and collaborating on operation strategies and technical solutions for world class theme parks.

Some of Noppen’s 2nd Annual Theme Park and Resort Expansion Summit most influential speakers on day one were Mr. ZHANG Jian Zhong the Press Spokesman and the Director of the Comprehensive Department, National Tourism Administration of People’s Republic of China. He gave us an excellent presentation about Interpretation on China's Theme Park Industry Policies and Project Development– How to Cultivate China’s Tourism Industry into National Economic Strategic Pillar Industry. He also, showed the delegates firsthand data of the Chinese government policies in regards to the tourism industry. Followed by a presentation titled “The Characteristics of the Theme Park Industry at The Current Stage” by Mr. ZHENG Wei, who is the GM of Happy Valley of OCT Group. His speech had 3 parts, the development characteristics, the market characteristics and the operation and management characteristics. The audience learnt a lot from his presentation through the samples and data he presented. Another influential speaker that day was Mr. Makoto SATO, President of Sanrio Entertainment Co Ltd; he was one of the most interesting speakers at the two- day Summit. During his presentation he showed us his corporate philosophy, the small gift and the birth of Hello Kitty and the way they improved the overall brand. Through cartoons and toys as well as themed places, Sanrio brought Hello Kitty to the world. Lastly he showed us their theme park in Japan and some new park project updates in Malaysia and China. The audience truly enjoyed his presentation. Next up was Mr. Budi Karya SUMADI, President Director of PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol. He presented a very good case study of Ancol Dreamland. He introduced the Dreamland and gave us an idea of the beginning of marvelous discoveries called “EDUTAINMENT”, which is a combination of entertainment and education to inspire children to ask not only what but also why and how. Edutainment can be implemented in all aspects of Ancol’s Dreamland. Followed by Mr. TAN Guangyuan, the VP of the Haichang Tourism Group Co Ltd, his presentation was about “Love for Penguin” —Haichang Tourism: Practitioner of Polar Science Education & Experience. In the beginning of the presentation he introduced the development of China’s Ocean Aquarium and then showed us some data on the development of the domestic Ocean Theme Park Industry. After that, Mr. Tan gave us a general idea of Haichang Tourism Group and their projects. The audience learned about the domestic ocean park industry through his attention-grabbing presentation. Ending the first day’s most influential speakers is Mr. Aaron SOO, the former CEO of Sunway Lagoon. Aaron was a very passionate speaker. His very energetic presentation about their Multi Park Attractions Integrated in their Resort Development Case Study: Sunway Lagoon, Asia’s Best Attraction painted a very vivid picture. He showed us a lot of examples and cases of the events that Sunway Lagoon hosts. According to the presentation Sunway Lagoon is today the preferred venue for both local and international concerts. A visit to Malaysia is not complete without visiting Sunway Lagoon, Asia’s Best Attraction. He was perhaps the most entertaining speaker.

Day two of the event began with FURUKAWA Nobuyuki, the President & CEO of Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. His presentation was about the company’s continued development and growth. Firstly he gave us a general introduction of Sea Paradise including Aquarium, Amusement Rides, Restaurants and Shopping Malls, hotels, etc. Then he talked about the roll-out plan for sustainable facilities development and career growth. At the end of his presentation he gave the prospect and vision for future growth and development. Next up was the speech of Exploring Location-Based Entertainment in China from Tom RENGER, the VP of Business Development & Planning of Paramount Parks & Resorts. The audience learned about the Paramount Parks and Resorts as well as their future plan in China. Another speaker was Mr. Christopher Lawrence YOSHII, the VP and Global Director of Economics for AECOM Asia; he presented the Overview and Outlook for the Theme Park Industry in China / Hong Kong 2012. He gave the overview of the Asian theme park industry and listed the top 20 theme parks in Asia. Then he shared his analysis of the trend of mid size parks in China, lessons from successful reinvestment, water parks, and cinemas in China. He also shared some challenges to the themed entertainment industry. Followed by Mr. Ding Wei, advisor of World Carnival Beijing Investment Corporation took the place of Ms ZHANG Shuhua and gave us an unforgettable speech of the Art + Social Network Rebooting Global Entertainment Industry. He told us the meaning of the Rebooting Global Entertainment Industry. He delivered a very thought-provoking presentation of the theme park industry. Lastly but not certainly not least, closing out the two-day event was Mr. Charles Read, Managing Director of Blooloop and also the chairman of the summit. He gave us a very clear introduction of the importance of Social Media for Attractions. The presentation was to tell the audience the importance of the new way that people communicate and how to use the channels properly. Social media is how your customers communicate, he mentioned that your brand is no longer under your control, it’s being shaped by your customers and you need to be part of the conversation.

Excluding the most influential speakers, there were many other excellent speeches which received even better feedback such as the very interesting panel discussion, about the Future Theme Park Development in China. The panel was moderated by Mr. Ding Wei adviser of World Carnival Beijing Investment Corporation and the other panelists were Mr. LI Yong, Director of Strategic Development, Shaanxi Culture Industry Investment Holding Group Co Ltd, Mr. TIAN Enming, Deputy General Manager, Dragon City Tourism Holding Group and Mr. GU Junfa, Deputy General Manager, Suzhou Amusement Land Co Ltd.

Also at the Summit there were, quite a few Introductions of new products and services, such as Mr. Scott ARNOLD, the Design Manager of Funa International, whom took the place of Brian Paiva to give us a fantastic presentation of Theme Park & Attraction Technologies: What’s new, what does the future hold and how Funa’s make the best use of technology in their projects. He painted a vivid picture of the technology from Funa International. The Producers Group sent two speakers to introduce their company and products; they’re Executive Producers & Co-CEO, Mr. Bob CHAMBERS and Mr. Edward S. MARKS. They gave us a fantastic presentation named Producing the Wow and explained to the developers and operators how they produced Wows. Mr. Markus BEYR, CEO, of Attraktion! GmbH is considered one of the world’s leading attraction producers, with more than 200 attractions realized in the last 20 years. He delivered a very impressive presentation the Chariots of the Gods Theme Park Project & the Rise of the MBA’s; he explained why COTG is the next generation theme park and gave an overview of the different attraction formats existing & upcoming. He also told the audience about the application and development of 3D/4D entertainment technology. Mr. David VATCHER, CEO of Technology and Projects of Dynamic Motion Rides GmbH gave a presentation about First Class Guest Experience: Discover Flyboard: the multi-media, multi-sensory, motion-based attraction with excellent ROI. Through his speech the audience got to know how the flyboard works, the idea of storyline options and the target market of the flyboard. At last he shared data and used cases to expound more on flyboard products. XIA Yan, Chairman, of Culture and Arts Gardening Group was replaced by their Chief Designer, Mr. Wu Zaiyue. Wu who gave a presentation on Environmental Art Research for Theme Parks, he explained how to integrate the cultural connotation into the environment’s art design of the theme park and how to discover the charm of the new orientalism. He also showed us a lot of cases that they made for some theme parks. Crayon YAO, Creative Director of YAOX5D GROUP, was the dinner sponsor of the summit, he gave us a speech of Theme Park's Secret Weapon- Special Cinema. He showed us some cases and products about how they do 4D, 5D as well as Central Screen Cinemas, Dome Theaters, and of course at last he let us know what YAOX5D Edutainment is. Creating Wonder-Filled Experiences was another excellent presentation presented by Mr. Gary GODDARD, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of the Goddard Group. He told the audience why some projects gain wild success and why others fail and why theming alone is no longer enough. He listed theme park projects to attraction projects and highlighted that “Concept is everything!” Mr. Joseph HO, Assistant VP of PCCW Solutions, gave us a speech of Delivering Successful ICT Systems for Theme Parks and Resorts to Enhance Customer Experience. The audience got a general idea of the PCCW Solutions from a comprehensive scope of service, theme park and resort related services, problems in daily operation from safety and security. Mr. Francis CHARAMEL, CEO of Sigma Subsidiary of Pomagalski in POMA. Showcased their aerial trams and told the audience about their observation platforms. He also gave us an idea of their funiculars and cabins for great wheels. And lastly, Mr. GUO Yang, the Technical Director of Shenzhen INFiLED Electronics Co Ltd. He presented the LED Display with theme parks. According to his presentation a theme park is the combination of Idea, Presentation, Attractiveness, Interactive and High Technology. Then he showed the LED display’s feature and the LED display in theme park’s application.
