Airport Development And Expansion Summit, 2012

December 13th -14th , 2012, Istanbul, Turkey

The Black Sea and Turkey region Airport Industry is growing in importance and is exemplified by the increase in regional area airport projects. Figures and forecasts are indicating that the amount of projects will only continue to increase. Mix ambitious airport projects in the region with Russia’s economic health stimulating the growth of airports, the outcome will transform the Black Sea and Turkey region into a key aviation transfer hub. The airports in the region need to accelerate their growth to keep up with the demand. 

Noppen’s Airport Development and Expansion Summit 2012 featured the most prominent industry leaders and government officials from across the globe providing informative and inspiring discussions pertaining to Turkey’s current needs and their ambitious future. Turkey welcomed the international community to join this forum to discover new strategies and technologies that can assist in building the airport industry to accommodate the domestic and international market. 

While there were a number of outstanding speakers at the event, Mr. Colin SPEAR, Assistant Director, Airport Development, International Air Transport Association (IATA) contributed the event the most in both days. His exquisite attention to details and efforts to strive for better with challenging questions were a reflection of his professionalism and solid reputation. As a well-respected figure and his years of experience in this industry makes the delegates listened intently to his comments and evaluation. 

Following Chairman’s, Esra KAYHANLI, General Manager, ÇEV – KA Consulting, opening speech and brief outlook of the industry, the event started with the Mr. Ahmet Cüneyt SELÇUK, Chief Project Director of Investment Support & Promotion Agency of Turkey presentation. He provided the investment environment and possibilities for investors. Mr. Colin SPEAR`s presentation provided the participants a brief summary of past, present and future of Airport Development. He also provided IATA`s expectations on Airports development in the region. Following that Mr. Graham BOLTON, Europe Aviation Leader of Arup presented a very comprehensive outlook about the Airport Master Planning in Successful Airport Development. “Airports Need to Adapt the demanding conditions of tomorrow and Evolve”. His presentation was greatly appreciated by the audience. 

Mr. Ender ÖZATAY, Managing Director for Turkey from ACO Turkey updated the participants regarding the recent developments in Water Drainage Management for Airports. Just before the lunch Mr. Bernard CREED, Vice President – Finance of Dubai Duty Free made a very impressive case study presentation on ways to increase Non-Aeronautical Revenues. Many of the executives participating in the summit described his presentation as inspiring. 

Tea break followed by the presentation of Mr. Okay KAYHANLI, General Manager Assistant and Coordinator, ÇEV – KA Consulting. He provided the details and regulations of Green Airport Development Project in Turkey. Mr. Søren ROBENHAGEN, Consul General of The Danish Trade Council in Istanbul emphasized the business opportunities and future cooperation possibilities in the region as a European partner to upcoming projects. Session was finalized by Mr. Özgür ÖZEL, Vice President – Marketing and Business Development of Iveco Magirus Brand schutztechnik GmbH. Latest technology vehicle Iveco Magirus was presented as the solution for Rescue and Fire-fighting Challenges in Airports. 

The Day One discussion panel led by Mr. Panagiotis POLIGENIS, Associate Partner of Lufthansa Consulting, where participants of the panel Mr. Diyan DINEV, Director General of Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority, Mr. Okay KAYHANLI, General Manager and Coordinator of ÇEV – KA Consulting and Mr. Gabriel DUMITRESCU, Director DR Bucuresti of R.A. Romatsa submitted their expectations of The Future of Airport Industry in Turkey and Black Sea. Being one of the most rapidly developing market in the region, numerous opportunities in different cities were discussed. Panelists also mentioned the finance, capacity and technology issues effecting the market. The day was closed by the remarks of the chairperson. 

Day Two started with Ms. Esra KAYHANLI`s opening remarks. She paved the way for Mr. Diyan DINEV, Director General of Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority. Mr. Dinev developed on the Airport Development Strategies Enhancing Economic and Community Growth, showing several charts and graphics regarding movements, approaches and future developments. Following speech was about Updating Security Systems in Current Challenging Climate which was presented by Mr. George DELIKOURAS, Head of Information Security of Athens International Airport. A very passionate speaker, Ms. Gonca PAŞOLAR, Co-Founder of Emre Arolat Architects managed to capture the audience entirely and triggered several comments from the listeners on the subject: Designs for Terminals That Meet Current and Future Requirements. 

Once coffee break was passed, the Partner & Architect, Ms. Melkan Gürsel TABANLIOĞLU from Tabanlıoğlu Architects took over, with a long but impressive slide show of Bodrum Airport project. Without doubt a very impacting and eye-opening design was implemented in Bodrum. 

Mr. Şakir BABACAN, Partner of Selkom Project & Architects, took participants on a 10 minute flight to some of the regions airports just before the discussion panel on Designing a Successful Airport Hub. Mr. Emre AROLAT, Owner of Emre Arolat Architects successfully guided Mr. Murat CENGIZ, Senior Architect of Tabanlıoğlu Architects, Ms. Gonca PAŞOLAR, Co-Founder of Emre Arolat Architects, Mr. Şakir BABACAN, Partner of Selkom Project & Architects and Mr. Graham BOLTON, Europe Aviation Leader of Arup. 45 Minute long discussion panel was the most interactive session of the day and received dozens of questions from the audience. 

Following lunch break Mr. Hüseyin ÖZHAN, Principal Banker of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development EBRD, revealed EBRD`s finance scheme for Airport Industry and projects in the region. His swift presentation was followed by Ms. Athina KAPENI, Global Director of Sales and Marketing of Çelebi Aviation Holding whom informed the participants about the path of Çelebi to raise the performance of ground handling services. She emphasized the importance of working together with the other parties to achieve efficient and high quality service standards. 

Mr. Dmitry V. RUDENKO, Development/Change Management Director of Pulkovo Airport shared insight on Black Sea and Turkey region future development and provided expansion plans of Pulkovo Airport which is continuously increasing its importance in the region. After his presentation, he participated in the discussion panel which was the final session of the summit. Mr. Onur GÜLEÇ, Country Director of Meinhardt led the debate on Do’s and Don’ts of expanding airports where Mr. Abdulla JANAHI, Vice President Infrastructure Development & Maintenance of Bahrain Airport, Mr. Sander JOOSTEN, Sales Director of DMi Airport Report and Mr. George DELIKOURAS, Head of Information Security of Athens International Airport brainstormed on various angles of expanding airport strategies. They debated over Do`s and Don’ts to achieve these goals while setting new standards in airport and airline efficiency, passenger convenience and service performance. Trends, challenges and future expectations were also discussed which wrapped up the summit`s two day topics in this final session.
