China Pulp & Paper Development Congress 2013

July 5th & 6th, 2013, Shanghai, China

Over the years, China has become the largest pulp and paper producing country in the world along with being the largest importer of paper products. Keeping this in perspective, China Pulp and Paper Development Congress 2013 was held in Shanghai on July 5th & 6th this year. 

The conference began with Mr. Feng Guoqiang, the Director of Forestry Economics and Development Research Center of State Forestry Administration where he drew a general image on forests in China for papermaking development prospects. He concluded his presentation with some facts where he pointed out that 15 years later, man-made board base of forest land will be gradually transformed into pulp forest and 50 years later, it can meet the domestic paper pulp forest needs, and gradually get rid of dependence on foreign imports of wood pulp and waste paper. Next, Mr. Yu Hai, the Director of Policy Research Center for Environment & Economy of Ministry of Environmental Protection, gave an exclusive speech about the current environmental situation and emissions of pollutants in the paper industry, presenting the target of emission reduction in twelfth five years plan, structure adjustment on paper industry and the most stringent environmental protection system in China. 

Later, Ms. Sari Hörkkö, Vice President of Communications, Energy and Pulp Business Group from UPM group, shared her experiences on international sustainable she gained from a Finnish based company through efficient operations, work safety and recognized certificates. Mr. Ulf Söderström, President of SCA Asia Pacific, introduced its products and sustainable operation worldwide. As a global leading household paper manufacturer, SCA sees sustainability as a business driver and apply in its innovation, customer relations, economic and social value and environmental value. Mr. Zhang Wenzhan, PR Director & Sustainable Development Director of APP China, spoke on practice on sustainable development resonated with all the delegates. He shared the practice on scientific forest management, forestry-pulp-paper integration and the technological innovation. Also, he focused on the green and sustainable paper industry in China in the future. 

Later, Mr. Zhang Zhenhuan, President Director Assistant & Vice Director, Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper, reviewed the key equipments in pulp production process and shared the treatment of waste water, exhaust gas and solid waste that Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper uses in order to achieve “Smokeless, Dustless and Garden Factory”. Next, a panel discussion was held where Mr. Zhang Wei, General Manager of Jiangsu Oji Paper, Mr. Tao Gang, General Manager of Stora Enso Huatai (Shandong) Paper and Mr. Sun Bingjian, Senior Director of Gold East Paper (Jiangsu) came together. They exchanged their insights and experiences on the current challenges and opportunities in developing green production practices, resource of raw materials, secure supply chain and the future industry development in pulp and paper industry. 

Day two began with Mr. Sun Bingjian, Senior Director of Gold East Paper (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd, where he analyzed the practice of green production and its achievement in depth with the audience. As one of the largest coated paper mill in the world, Gold East Paper utilizes resource conservation, cycling utilization, energy-saving and emission-reduction, green consumption and scientific management to achieve the result of green paper production. Up next, Mr. Ma Lichao, Chief Representative in China of Forest Stewardship Council was the chairman of two-day conference. During his speech, he introduced the concept of responsible forest management of FSC with audience. He also focused on certain aspects about general impacts of FSC certification in China. Mr. Chai Aiming, CI Leader of Kimberley-Clark China, gave a unique presentation on lean manufacturing journey in Kimberley-Clark. Through his speech, the audience learnt the lean working model in manufacturing and systematic lean talent building program in the company. 

Other noteworthy speakers were Mr. Qi Yongyi, Deputy General Manager of China Haisum Engineering, who presented a general picture of the current situation of China’s pulp and paper industry and its future development. Mr. Qin Menghua, President of Taishan University, hosted and undertook more than 20 scientific projects including the National Natural Science foundation of China and some international cooperation projects supported by state, province and various enterprises. He showed the audience the current research project of biomass refining technology, researching on cottonwood and bamboo. Later, Mr. Sun Runcang, Director of State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering of South China University of Technology, presented a paper on lignin products chain and lignin industrialization. 

The conference also featured TUV Rheinland, Noppen’s speech sponsor, arranged their Senior Technology Manager of Light Industrial Products Department to make an excellent speech about its service of FSC certificated bringing to all the pulp and paper manufacturers. Through his introduction, the audience got a clear image about the technical service that TUV Rheinland could provide in pulp and paper industry. Besides, some other sponsors showed their newest products to all the delegates and had in-depth discussion with the leading pulp and paper companies onsite. Another noteworthy event was where speakers accepted the onsite media interview by Noppen’s media partner.
