South East Asia Auto Summit, 2013

26-27 June 2013, Jakarta, Indonesia

The event was organized by Lnoppen, a Shanghai based business insight facilitator. Qasa Strategic Consulting acted as strategic advisor of the event and was represented by Mr. Joko Wiyono, the Managing Director of the company, who chaired the two days summit held in Inter-Continental Jakarta from 26th to 27th of July 2013. The conference was aimed at providing lastest update and future outlook on the development of the automotive industry in South East Asia region. Speaking in the event among others were Mr. Joko Wiyono of Qasa Consulting; Mr. Mukiat Sutikno Vice President Director of PT. Hyundai Motor Indonesia Mr. Andy Tian, Commercial Director for Beiqi Foton Company; Mr Michael J Dunne – President of Car Keys Indonesia; Soni Solistia Wirawan-Energy Technology Center (B2TE) Agency For The Assessment And Application Of Technology (BPPT); Mr. Hadi Surjadipradja – Indonesian Automotive Parts & Components Industries Association (GIAMM) and Mr. Ir. Achmad Kurniadi, MBA Deputy Chairman of Investment Corporation (BKPM)

The audience of the summit were representatives of automotive manufactures, global supppliers of manufacturing technology and services, engineering design company, parts manufacturers, and second tier suppliers to the industry such as chemical, coating, and plastic products.

Highlight of the Summit:
Several key highlights are the changes of automotive consumers in the Indonesian market and the possibility new automotive manufacturers emerging among the existing automotive producers and the phenomenal growth of automotive production for both two wheeler and four wheeler. Other highlights are the governement’s initiation starting from the future implementation of alternative fuel down up to creating favorable investment environment for automotive development.

New demand shifts towards mass market and fi rst-time car buyers, evolving to the motorcycle industry characteristics. Strengthening sales & distribution network is critical to winning competition. The stagerring middle class growth from 37,7% in 2003 to 56,5% in 2010 that is over half of the national population. The rising population share of country’s middle class spending US$2 – US$ 20 per day. For that reason, it will encourage manufacturers to produce more mid class vehicles and defi nately more variety in the motorcycle market.

In terms of Investment opportunity in the Automotive sector covers the increasing income per capita (middle income level market size & growth); increasing consumption, GDP and other related macro-economic indicators; more conducive investment climate creation; potential natural resources that can support automotive; potential natural resources that can support automotive manufacturing industry; development of good infrastructures, supporting infrastructure projects; increasing construction projects throughout provinces (demand in light-heavy vehicle/transport etc); increasing demand on “green car/vehicles” due to higher priced-fuel and fossil-energy scarcity in the future.

In near future, Indonesia should consider utilizing the alternative fuel and in this case, BioFuel. Biofuel has its own birght future but it does come with its own challenges. Biofuel product price should be competitive; challenges in sustainability of biofuel program; maintain the quality product always compatible with standard of existing engine; good coordination between stakeholders; commitment from all stakeholders including regulator/government,academician and business/industry sector.
