Turkey Hotel Expansion Summit

May 26th - 27th, 2011, Istanbul, Turkey

ISTANBUL, TURKEY, 26-27 MAY 2011 – In Turkey, the number of hotel rooms increased 67% over the last decade. In 2009, Turkey climbed up to 15th position in relation to the tourism and travel industry revenue recorded by World Travel and Tourism Council. In addition to tourism, business and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) also made significant contribution to the increase in hotel room demand. With this increase in tourism, hotels have been expanding at a phenomenal pace across Turkey

The Turkey Hotel Expansion Summit took place on the 26-27 May 2011 in Grand Hyatt hotel, Istanbul, Turkey. The summit, organized by Noppen, was attended by 120 government representatives, industry experts and members of the international community to discuss how, by working together; they can ensure that Turkey will achieve its goals. “Great opportunity to get to know development, opportunities and suppliers”, Hilton.

Day one began with an opening speech from the Chairman and this was followed by a number of interesting speeches on a wide range of topics from ‘Trends & Innovations for the Spa Industry’ to ‘Design Elements to Enhance Guests Bathing Experiences’. The most well received speech of the day came from Peter Vermeer, Vice President Development of Benelux & Eastern Europe (& Turkey), IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group). He spoke of franchising and how franchising may be able to assist property owners. He stated that by franchising, hotels have access to the international operator’s marketing and sales campaigns. This will benefit the hotels because the hotels will also be part of a rewards system that will entice both business travelers as well as families. The attendees listened to his speech carefully and particularly enjoyed the discussion panel that Peter Vermeer participated in along with Haluk Kaya, Chairman of Bekay Property Partners and Kevin Scholl, Senior Vice President of WATG. They led a spirited discussion panel regarding the green hotel movement. They highlighted that understanding your clients’ needs is extremely important when constructing a green hotel. While older patrons may not feel that the green movement is as necessary, younger generations are increasingly looking for green hotels to stay at and will opt to stay at an environmentally friendly hotel when given the opportunity. “Good organization and good topics”,Pentair.

Day two of the event began with key speaker, Takuya Aoyama, Vice President of Acquisitions and Development, Hyatt International. His speech was based on finding the right international partners and successfully negotiating contracts. During his speech he spoke about what parts of contracts should and should not be negotiated between operators and owners. Mr. Aoyama also itemized which areas international lawyers would need to be brought in to negotiate and helped the audience understand why international lawyers were necessary and not local lawyers. Takuya Aoyama’s speech received positive feedback from the attendees because of the informative context. His speech was shortly followed by Haluk Kaya, Chairman of Bekay Property who spoke about the need to maximize space for guest rooms and minimize F&B and ballrooms. By doing so, he told the audience that they will be able to better assure profitability. Mr. Kaya also spoke on how investing in city hotels can be more valuable than luxury hotels. While luxury hotels are what every rich investor wants to build, to ensure profitability, smaller city hotels should be built.

Other notable speakers came from Dedeman Hotels & Resorts International, KLAFS, Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, Schneider Electric, Samsung, Hansgrohe, Nalco, Marriott International, Somfy, Marioff Group, BREEAM, and Ecological Architecture, Permak, S2000 and Meiko. “The Turkey Hotel Expansion Summit 2011 was very good.
