ISTANBUL– Turkey’s automotive sector broke its all‐time record with the number of vehicles produced in 2011, by reaching the nearly 1.2 million mark, the sector manufactured approximately 650,000 passenger cars and 550,000 commercial vehicles last year, marking an 11 % increase from the year.
With a growing economy and young, educated workforce, Turkey is expanding auto production exponentially. Companies across the world, such as Nissan, Ford, Fiat, Toyota, Hyundai and BMW, are racing to Turkey and spending hundreds of millions of dollars to setup new factories and expand existing ones to supply both the international and domestic market. These indicators point to a structural shift within the Turkish auto sector indicating that Turkey is on the verge of a breakthrough in its goal of becoming one of the top auto producers not just in Europe but globally.
Turkey is now considering creating a “Made in Turkey” brand as well to showcase their achievements to the rest of the world.
